The present research book is an effort to apply psychoanalytical theory to the female characters in the select novels of Shashi Deshpande, Githa Hariharan, Manju Kapur and Shobhaa De. The novels analyzed for the present study are: Shashi Despande’s, The Dark Holds No Terror, Githa Hariharan’s, The Thousand Faces of Night, Manju Kapur’s, A Married Woman, Shobhaa De’s, Sultry Days and Sethji. It is attempted to search root cause behind abnormalities of female characters in the said novels so that the female characters can be interpreted with the help of psychoanalytical theory and consequently, the novels can be understood in a better way.
It is observed that psychoanalytical theory of Sigmund Freud and post Freudian psychoanalysts, Alfred Adler, Carl Jung, Karan Horney, Anna Freud, Jacques Lacan, Julia Kristeva and Slavoj Zizek, has proved useful to interpret English novels.
